Quick answer: SAP ends mainstream maintenance for SAP ECC 6.0 (enhancement packages 6 to 8) on 31 December 2027. After that you can pay roughly 2 percentage points more for extended maintenance until the end of 2030, move eligible large landscapes to SAP ERP, private edition for a transition option running 2031 to 2033, switch to third-party support, or migrate to SAP S/4HANA.
With about 14 months left, the question for most Indian enterprises is no longer whether to move, but which bridge to use while they move. This guide sets out every option, who it suits, and a 90-day plan to decide.
What exactly ends on 31 December 2027?
Mainstream maintenance for SAP Business Suite 7, which includes SAP ERP 6.0 (ECC) on enhancement packages 6, 7 and 8, ends on 31 December 2027. Systems on enhancement packages 0 to 5 already lost mainstream maintenance at the end of 2025.
Mainstream maintenance is the standard support you pay for today: legal and tax updates, security patches and fixes. Your system will not stop working on 1 January 2028. What stops is SAP’s standard support for it.
Your four options after 2027
Option | Runs until | Cost signal | Who it suits | Main risk |
Extended maintenance from SAP | 31 Dec 2030 | Around 2 percentage points above your current maintenance rate | Companies on EHP 6+ that will finish S/4HANA by 2030 | No new features; the fee is paid for the full term |
SAP ERP, private edition, transition option | 2031 to 2033 | Cloud subscription; perpetual ECC licences are given up | Large, complex landscapes already on a RISE with SAP path | System must run on SAP ERP, private edition by end of 2030 |
Third-party support | Beyond 2030 | Typically lower than SAP fees | Stable systems with little planned change | Returning to SAP later can trigger reinstatement fees |
Migrate to SAP S/4HANA | S/4HANA support runs to at least 2040 | Project cost now, lower technical debt later | Most mid-size and large companies | Partner and consultant capacity tightens as 2027 nears |
After 2030, customers who take none of these routes fall into customer-specific maintenance, which does not deliver legal changes. For Indian companies, missing GST and statutory changes is the real business risk.
Is the 2033 option a blanket extension?
No. The SAP ERP, private edition, transition option is a cloud subscription, not a support extension for on-premise ECC. Your ECC system must run on SAP HANA and be moved into SAP ERP, private edition before the end of 2030. From 2031 to 2033 the option is available, and SAP’s Max Success Plan is required during that period. It is aimed at large enterprises with complex landscapes, not single-instance mid-market users.
Can we still finish an S/4HANA migration before 2027 ends?
For a single-instance ECC system with a clean data set, a system conversion (brownfield) can fit into roughly 12 months if you start now. Larger or heavily customised landscapes usually need extended maintenance as a bridge. Either way, the preparation work is identical: custom-code analysis, master-data cleansing and process review. None of that is wasted, whichever option you choose.
A 90-day decision plan
- Weeks 1 to 2: Inventory. Record your ECC release, enhancement package, database, number of instances and active users. Pull your SAP maintenance contract renewal date.
- Weeks 3 to 5: Readiness check. Run SAP Readiness Check and a custom-code analysis. Count custom objects that are actually used, not just those that exist.
- Weeks 6 to 8: Data health. Measure duplicate vendors and customers, open items and incomplete material masters. Our post on data harmonization before migration explains how.
- Weeks 9 to 10: Choose the approach. Compare greenfield, brownfield and selective data transition against your process goals and budget.
- Weeks 11 to 12: Decide the bridge and the team. Decide whether you need extended maintenance, then lock in your migration partner and internal team. See how to staff an S/4HANA migration.
Greenfield, brownfield or selective data transition?
Approach | What it means | Choose it when |
Greenfield | New S/4HANA implementation with redesigned processes | Your ECC processes are outdated or heavily customised |
Brownfield (system conversion) | Convert the existing system, keeping history and configuration | Processes still work well and timelines are tight |
Selective data transition | New system shell with selected data and configuration moved | You want to redesign some areas but keep history |

Frequently asked questions
When does SAP ECC support end?
Mainstream maintenance for ECC 6.0 on enhancement packages 6 to 8 ends on 31 December 2027. Paid extended maintenance runs to 31 December 2030.
Will my SAP ECC system stop working in 2028?
No. The system keeps running, but SAP’s standard maintenance stops unless you buy extended maintenance or move to another support model.
How much does SAP extended maintenance cost?
Extended maintenance adds about 2 percentage points to your current maintenance rate for 2028 to 2030. Confirm the exact figure in your SAP contract.
Does the 2033 transition option apply to every company?
No. It requires moving to SAP ERP, private edition by the end of 2030 and targets large, complex landscapes on the RISE with SAP path.
How long does an S/4HANA migration take?
A single clean ECC instance can often convert in about a year. Multi-instance or heavily customised landscapes typically take longer and benefit from a bridge.
